Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Kilwa Masoko Exploration
Your journey begins with a morning departure from Dar es Salaam, traveling south towards Kilwa Masoko. The scenic drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, passing through coastal landscapes, rural villages, and lush vegetation. Upon arrival in Kilwa Masoko, you’ll check in and take some time to relax.
In the afternoon, you’ll explore Kilwa Masoko town, visiting the local market, the fishing harbor, and enjoying a sunset walk along the beach. This is a great opportunity to experience the local culture and witness the traditional dhows (wooden sailing boats) returning from fishing.
Day 2: Kilwa Kisiwani UNESCO Heritage Site Tour
After breakfast, you’ll take a boat ride to Kilwa Kisiwani Island, one of the most important Swahili trading settlements in East Africa. The island was a powerful trading hub from the 9th to the 18th century, connecting Africa with the Middle East, India, and China.
Your guided tour will take you through the Great Mosque of Kilwa (one of the oldest mosques in East Africa), the Husuni Kubwa Palace (a 14th-century sultan’s palace), and the ancient fortresses and wells. As you explore, you’ll learn about Kilwa’s rich history, including its role in the gold, ivory, and spice trade.
After the tour, you’ll return to Kilwa Masoko for a relaxing beach afternoon, where you can swim, sunbathe, or enjoy fresh seafood by the ocean.
Day 3: Beach Relaxation & Departure
On the final day, you’ll have a relaxed morning at the beach, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of Kilwa’s coastline. If you’re interested, you can take a boat excursion to the nearby mangroves, visit a local fishing village, or snorkel in the clear waters of Kilwa Lagoon.
After lunch, you’ll begin your return journey to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the evening.
